Discrimination? Color or Power?

In the famous movie, Django unchained, freeman Django is experiencing doubt and discrimination from the whites and the society. When they are entering the plantation of Calvin, the steward, also a black person, is attacking Django via disdainful language and rude behavior.

However, it is worth mentioning that the steward is also a black person, but he still discriminate Django only based on his black face. The color seems cannot be simply explained as the reason of the discrimination, and these behaviors cannot be concluded into racism issue.
The steward's power is coming from his master, Calvin. But go deeper to the origin of Calvin's power; it is the legal system that helps the white people to control the black salve as their properties rather than normal people. And it is the power from the legal system that silence the black's complains and convey them the inferiority mind. On the other hand, it is Django's weapon on his hand enable himself to invisibly fight back the steward via his cold face against the steward.

So far, one thing that can be sure is that the mutual discrimination between the steward and Django comes from the different power they own. And these powers make them feel superior to the other one from the heart.
After the power, both from authority and from the weapon, is given to some people, they have the special and superior rights to do something that normal people cannot do. When some vicious purposes are added into the difference, the discrimination forms. In this case, when the power comes to white and black issue, the racism is raised. So, generally, it is the power that makes people distinct themselves from the others and finally forms the discrimination between two groups of people.

  1. Hello Wei Li, great blog post! In your blog's third paragraph you state it is the legal system that is maintaining the injustice and discrimination against the black people, and I can see why you would state this due to the black vs. black confrontation between the steward and Django, and the huge institutions that exist to maintain slavery, but I disagree with you when you state it is the legal system that is maintaining the slavery. I encourage you to think about what is redundant in the movie, which is wealthy white people vs a peculiar black man that uses violence to get his point across. See, instead of focusing on the legal system, focus on the economy as the root of the cause. Governments are built around economies, and what I mean by that is economy comes before government. The legal system in the 1800's acknowledged that slavery was violating constitutional rights, but seeing as the plantations were so important to the American economy, people came to peace with slavery until the southern states began to succeed from the Union. It is reasonable to speculate that slavery would have existed without a central government, as it survived during the American revolution. Perhaps the violence that Django uses represents the spirit of the American revolution, and makes a statement that the revolution has not ended because not every has become "free" under the new government. I want you to focus on the wealthy white people in the movie because they illustrate how economic wealth and prosperity were the purpose for slavery. And with the slavery, came inexcusable discrimination. Take care Wei.

  2. I like how you put the specific screen shot on, it is much easier for the reader who never seen the movie before to understand what is going on in your post. The problem of racist has been going on since long time ago, it is fading away little by little, but never really goes away. It is interesting that this example is not a white to black, it is black to black, which makes an fantastic point that which is the real reason of the discrimination.

  3. First, it is easy to got you because you have a large font size to make me read easily. Second, I can understand your topic which is racism, very clearly. You have your pictures posted by Chinese and that is an easy way to make Chinese people understand it easily. Your topic is also very interesting. You focus on black to black discrimination. I think you can find more examples as the secondary source or some background history to give us more information to get to know what is the black people thinking about by discriminating black people?
