Run the World (Girls) and Gender Inequality Fades Away

Beyoncé Knowles’s music video, “Run the World (Girls)”, was released on April 21st, 2011. Before people are going to watch the video, the first thing they will notice might be the name that is “Run the World (Girls)”. And it is really interesting that Beyoncé shows her ambition at the very beginning, which is girls rule the world. So why she keeps emphasizing that girl run the world? What will they obtain after taking over the world?

Let’s discuss more deeply about the music video. Through the whole video, Beyoncé and her girls, who are barely equipped, seem to conquer against with a team of well-armed men in order to reach their goal. At this point, an obvious contrast occurs, and it also reflects the unequal material arrangements. As you all know, material arrangement is the most effective way to reveal inequalities. So Beyoncé might want to shows that women still cannot get equal treatments as men do in current society. Is this real or is this kind of inequality apparent currently?

Examining further, Beyoncé sings, “ I work my nine to five, better cut my check.” Without doubt, she wants to be independent of men by earning her own life. However, it is common that men often make more money than women at present. Is this wage gap a gender inequality? No! According to the Equal Pay Act passed in 1963, women and men are supposed to have equal payments for equal work. And there are researches showing that men and women do get almost the same salaries for the same jobs. The real wage gaps are caused by sex segregation. Sex segregation means gender beliefs and sex’s unique traits push men or women to choose some stereotypical male or female work. People often apply jobs according to what they can do. So after years’ experience and the established occupational structure, they are more willing to be engaged in the jobs what they think they are more capable. Aside from the stereotypical occupational structure, men and women face the equal work opportunities and they can get fair treatments in paid world.

  1. Your blog reveals that the real reason for inequality wage depends on stereotypical occupational structure which restricts people to choose jobs. Your topic is mainly about the gender inequality. So maybe you can focus more on the reason why the current occupational structure exists and people's attitude to it. Besides, I am favor of the idea that some works are more fit for male and others are more fit for female. Absolutely equality does not exist in the world.

  2. I think sex segregation is not the only reason for the inequality of employment. Yes, laws regulate men and women must have equal payments for the same job position. But that doesn’t mean men and women have the same opportunity for a certain position. Because employment is not a one way road, it involves both sides. So I think sex segregation not only results to men and women’s different choices in seeking jobs, but leads to employers’ certain gender tendency for a certain position. Cause over the long time sex segregation is a concept rooted so deep in people’s head that they even barely notice it.

  3. Your topic is about gender inequality, and you focus on the aspect of wage inequality due to “sex segregation”. It is an interesting view that the wage gap is not caused by the gender difference. As you said, male and female can get the equal job opportunities and get equal salary if they do the same work. I just think men get a higher wage than women because of gender inequality. But in your opinion, men get a higher wage because the job they choose deserves to get a higher pay. It’s is really a big difference from what I thought before. Besides, it seems like your focus doesn’t have a strong relationship to the music video. You can try to find more relations between them.

  4. I think you did a great job about the topic equality of the sex. You gives lots of examples from the music video as the primary source. I think this is really a good topic to think about. However, you use the job and wage inequality to explain the sex inequality situation. Job inequality is a part of sex inequality but we can see sex inequality in many fields of our society such as a sterotype, people always think women as "household person", but men are "job person". Why this situation can happen? What is the history about this thinking?
