Me or Money??!!!

21 or more? Right place to explore!!! Less than 21? No worries, you can voice your opinions freely and learn one of the most useful lessons in life!!!!!

We all know that getting married is the most essential and sacred decision in one’s whole life. Choose a right partner, you can live a happy life; choose a wrong one, life sucks! The question is, how to find our Mr. or Miss. Right? British romance movie Pride & Prejudice (2005) and the same name novel may offer you different points of view about marriage.

The movie, stars by actress Keira Knightley (Elizabeth Bennet) and Matthew Macfadyen (Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy), has a proposal sense to show heroine’s attitude.

Your arrogance and conceit, your selfish disdain for the feelings of others made me realize you were the last man in the world I could ever marry”.

Elizabeth refuses the man who she thinks has unpleasant characteristics and inappropriate manners, regardless of his handsome appearance and wealthy property. The director builds a female image that dares to challenge hierarchy and pursuit her own happiness, suggesting the great progress of feminism in 21 century. Women are no longer the accessories of men, ye~~

In the contrary, at the beginning of Austen’s novel, the author states her opinion about the marriage: It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife. A rich man wants a beautiful wife, another pretty collection to show off?! A woman also wants to marry a wealthy man, the second and the last chance to change her life (if she wasn’t born in a high-rank family, and unfortunately this is usually the case……). Women at that time only care about how much money a man has, however ugly, pompous, selfish he is. $ manipulates hormone.

But we can judge the behavior in terms of our perspectives. As modern people, we may look down upon those women, who bury themselves in a loveless marriage in exchange for money. On the other hand, if the old-time people still alive now, they may also sneer at those “stupid” women, cause life is so cruel that defeat Platonic Love. You just can’t live a life without money. Survival anxiety will diminish love gradually.

The essence of marriage is……. Quote a Chinese poem: I love you, I love the person, I also love the sky above your head and the land beneath your feet.

  1. I like this blog. It 's colorful and logic is clear. And it is a good idea to use different typefaces to emphasize the points. It's true that the female character is bright and brave. She always knows that the importance to find a right one and never stop to chase her happiness. The topic in the movie/book is impressive. "love or money", it is a hard choose. The female before 20th century could not choose their love free but now the situation is different. However, "love and money" is still the a difficult choose. People cannot live without love and at the meantime they cannot live without material also. The blog give brief discussion about it. So it's good.

    1. Qianhui, thank you for your compliments:)Like you said, it's hard to choose between love and money, even in our 20th century. The time is changed indeed, but other difficult situations occur. From this movie, people need to think more about their motivation towards marriage. Hope every couple could have a happy ending!!

  2. I find it very interesting that you talk about how older women who married men for their money look down on women that want love for the actual love and not the money. I had never really seen this side of the classic money versus love story. I say it is classic of course because of the many movies that have to do with the choices that women sometimes make. Take The Notebook for example. I do find it interesting that you discussed that you can't live a life without money and those without money will gradually lose their love for one another. I have never thought of it in such a way and have always been the type of person to root for the true love instead of the money. Because of this, I might have to think twice about such decisions.

    1. OMG...you might misunderstood my points...NOT elder women would look down upon those who marry for true.Instead, the point is the definition for love and marriage is different in ancient and modern times~
Plus, I totally agree with your "root for true love" opinion. I believe everyone is waiting for their soul mates. However, life is life, but a novel or fair tale. We might take more factors into consideration when we make this sacred decision^^

  3. Beautiful arrangement of this blog!

I really enjoy reading your post especially those nice quotes from the original work. I read your post twice as the first time I only focused on your highlighted part but forget the rest!

Come back to the topic of marriage, sadly there are still many arranging couples nowadays. I feel like marriage should not be a bundling bundle relationship but a beautiful outcome of love. I completely agree to the saying that girl should defend their rights to find their love of life.

I like your post and it motivates me again to read this novel and watch the film

  4. We write about the same movie although it is in different angle. I like your colorful and highlighted words and those "??!!" punctuation ,which differentiates blog to academic writing, a much more formal type. You add photos and a video. It makes your point clear to those people who did not watch this movie before. Also, your topic is interesting to show "progress of feminism in 21st century".
