“Women Liberation” in movie “Cloud Altas”

The women liberation process has lasted for a long time and encouragingly, the result is quite fruitful. “Feminisim” topic can be found in multiple issues. The topic of movie can reflect the “feminisim” sometimes.

One section/chapter in movie “Cloud Atlas” reflects the topic about “women liberation”. The female protagonist in the movie makes a breakthrough from obey to rebell and become a human spirit leader in the end of the movie. (By the way, I highly recommend this deep going movie which adapted from a book.) The female protagonist finish the “women liberation” process in the movie and it lead my research topic “elements which contribute to women’s liberation”. By analyzing the character example in the movie, the elements contribute to her liberation are positive outer stimulation; education and the willing to explore the “truth”. Though real life are not as dramatic as the story in the movie, there are some similarities. The elements contributes to “women liberation” also applicable in real world. In real world, the “positive outer stimulation” is the WWII, which offer women opportunities to get access to jobs and be independent on finance. Obviously, “education” is very essential for female consciousness awakening. Like the dialogue in movie, “knowledge is a mirror, it helps me know who I am.” Education help women be “self-direction”. Also, the “willing to explore the truth” is crucial to women liberation. Whatever in movie or in real life, “willing” can always be a driving force and sometimes be  a tuning point. The “wiling” to figure out everyone are equal is the drving force for women liberation in real world.

  1. Your analysis is quite insightful. I agree with you that “education” and “willingness” are two elements contribute to women liberation. However, you only tell what the women should do to promote the process of women liberation or how the women enhance themselves. What role should the men play in the process of women’s liberation? It seems to me that the greatest obstacle is that the men who remain the dominant are not willing to let the women take charge. In America, the male-female ratio in college stays roughly equal, those female graduates have both good education and willingness to explore, however after 20 years most of them still can't compete with their alumni.

  2. Qiuhui, I envy your patience to watch this lllllooooooonnnnnggggg film! I only watched it for a moment and I stoped... There are too many relationships in it, and many stories take place in a second....I CANNOT digest all of these infor...:(

But according to your words, I kind of have a quick glimpse through the movie. And you successfully arouse my interest in “elements contribute to women’s liberation”. Education and the persistence for truth. This makes sense! One is for the brain, another is for the spirit. Women just got the most powerful "weapons" to fight for their own brilliant future~ Go bucks!!
